I'm Dreaming

Every year I always find I get the song, ‘ White Christmas’ stuck in my head, especially the jazzy version done by Michael Bublé. Of course this wonderful song rings all the louder in my head as the snow gently falls on a cold winters day. For me, it simply wouldn’t be Christmas without the snow on the ground and being frozen to my core. I am always dreaming of a ‘white Christmas’, and the wonderful time of year it is.

As we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent, we are focused on the role, response, and figure of Joseph. Here is a man who has not a single word spoken in the entire bible, who works as the silent protector of the Son of God. In todays gospel, Joseph had decided to divorce Mary, since she was with a child that was easily known not to be his. Divorce in that time was as easy as writing a note and presenting it to the woman's father. As he had just made up his mind, an angel of the lord intervened in a dream and changed his life.

Dreams are the means of divine communication. There are numerous examples in the history of salvation, from Jacobs dream of the ladder to heaven or Josephs dream in Genesis or of Daniels dream. Divine communication through dreams occurs at decisive and determining moments in history. The appearance of the dream to Joseph is of no exception. The angel appears and requests that Joseph becomes and plays an integral part in the divine plan. Upon awakening, Joseph accepts his divine call to participate in the kingdom of God and to become more than just an average Joe,

As Catholics, we are all called to be participants in the divine will. Each of us play an integral part in the establishment of Gods kingdom. God calls each and every one of us, through different people or events (and yes even through dreams!), asking us to participate in his divine will and point to The truth. That truth, is the truth we find in the poor, humbled, dependent, cold, secret child laid on a bed of hay in a wooden manger in Bethlehem.

As we eagerly await the coming of our Lord is just a couple of days, may we continuously form our lives around the will of our Father, so that he may find us ready, and determined to be partakers in the divine drama. May we open our hearts to receive and accept the role that God is asking each one us to take in his so that truly our “days will be merry and bright.’
